What Are NovaThreads?

NovaThreads, the first FDA cleared PDO thread, are used for a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment called a thread lift. As its name implies, thread lifting is used to create the appearance of lifting and tightening in order to rejuvenate the face and neck but can be also be applied to other body parts where such effects are desired. NovaThreads can significantly improve the appearance of jowls and nasolabial folds as well as give the appearance of a more sculpted jawline.

PDO stands for polydiaxanone, a material that has been used in surgical sutures for many decades made of a biodegradable and biocompatible type of sugar. Barbed and molded threads created a lifted appearance while also boosting collagen production in the skin as much as 20X whereas smooth and twisted threads are used to smooth out wrinkles and increase collagen production and are particularly useful in difficult to treat areas such as the undereye area and around the mouth.

The Procedure

After a thorough assessment, the treatment areas are marked, and the skin is cleansed and prepped for the procedure. A numbing agent is injected to minimize any discomfort from the procedure.

Using a fine needle or cannula, specialized dissolvable threads are carefully inserted under the skin, targeting specific areas that require lifting and tightening or could benefit from increased collagen production. Once inserted, the threads are gently adjusted to achieve the desired lift and contour.

The entire procedure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

The Result

Patients can typically see some immediate results right after the procedure due to the physical lifting effect of the inserted threads. However, the full and more noticeable results develop over time as the threads stimulate collagen production and improve the skin’s texture and firmness.

Within the first few weeks after the procedure, patients may start to notice further improvements as the collagen-building process begins. These improvements continue to progress over the following months, with optimal results becoming apparent around 2 to 3 months after the treatment.

On average, patients can enjoy the benefits of NovaThreads for up to a year or more and further treatments can be done to extend or enhance the results.

Thread lifts can be used to treat various areas of the face and body including cheeks, jowls, brows, jawline, marionette lines and the undereye area as well as neck, decollete, abdomen, knees, underside of upper arms, buttocks.

A comprehensive treatment at Lumera consists of one treatment given over the course of two sessions with bulk of the threads would be placed during the first visit and fewer threads placed to optimize results during the second session about 6 weeks later.

Most patients can expect to resume their normal daily activities within a few days after the procedure. However, it’s essential to follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by the treating provider to ensure optimal results and minimize any potential side effects.
